Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) Coverage for Eye Examinations

Children - 19 years of age and younger are eligible for one full eye examination every 12 months.

Seniors - 65 years and older - with diabetes, glaucoma, cataract, retinal disease, corneal disease, optic nerve pathway disease, uveitis or sudden onset of strabismus  are OHIP covered every 12 months for a complete eye exam and an a maximum of two OHIP-insured follow-up. Without one of the above sight-threatening conditions seniors are OHIP covered every 18 months for a complete annual eye exam and an a maximum of two OHIP-insured follow-up.

Adults - 20 to 64 years old - with diabetes, glaucoma, cataract, retinal disease, corneal disease, optic nerve pathway disease, uveitis or sudden onset of strabismus  are OHIP covered every year for a complete eye exam and an a maximum of two OHIP-insured follow-up.

Adults - 20 to 64 years old who do not have any of the above condtions are not covered by OHIP and will have to pay. Most insurance companies will provide coverage for eye examinations as well as for glasses and/or contact lenses. Please call your insurance provider and find out what type of coverage you have.
